The S3 is Cervelo’s first disc equipped aero bike. It looks a little more conventional than the S5, taking design cues from the R-series, but is only slightly less slippery and it comes in a little lighter. Whilst still a stiff responsive race bike it’s tuned for a little more comfort with thin seatstays and a bladed aero seatpost which is designed to have some flex at the top to further improve comfort.
The conventional thinking is that disc bikes are less aero but with the disc version of the S3 Cevelo have improved aerodynamics on other parts of the bike to give an overall improvement. The very wet first few weeks of August show that the predictable all weather performance of disc brakes aren’t just a benefit in the winter months.
This is a thoroughly modern frame with 12mm through axles to keep it stiff at both front and rear (and put to rest any fears of ejecting front wheels). The bike comes with Cervelo’s proprietary aero bar which has the benefit of using a standard stem so adjusting bike fit is easier. On our bikes the gearing is mostly Ultegra but with an FSA chainset to allow short 405mm chainstays to keep the handling quick. The Shimano's RS685 disc brakes fitted have proved themselves to be powerful and reliable with great control and modulation. If you want to switch to DI2 gearing in future the frame has all the requisite ports.
It all adds up to another great bike from Cervelo that comes in at a lower price point the the S5 and is arguably more flexible in application. Our stock is brand new with full warranty and £800 off the RRP and we've currently got a 51cm and 54cm frame.
